What Does Your Car’s Cooling System Do

Hello and welcome back to our series on automotive tools and how to guides for the new weekend warrior auto mechanic. This isn’t meant for the professional, but rather the average Joe who is looking to get his hands a little dirty on the weekends. In the past, we have covered a lot of tools but in today’s article I’m going to cover what it is that your car’s cooling system is design for. If you’ve been following along with my articles you should have a basic understanding of how your engine works.

It intakes air and fuel at a mixture of nearly 9,000lbs of air per 1lb of fuel by volume, and compresses them inside the combustion chamber. At that point, Spark travel through your ignition coil, through the distributor, down the plug where to where it jumps the gap in between the spark plug electrodes and combustion results.

Engine Oil Coolers

All engines require a cooling system which is provided by the radiator system containing water. However, high-performance autos used in competitive motor sports, or vehicles whose engines have to work hard to carry large weights or tow other vehicles have benefited from the installation of separate engine oil coolers. In order to remove one third of the heat generated by the engine, the integration of reliable and efficient engine oil coolers is becoming more common in all types of motor vehicles.

Generally, a car’s engine has two cooling systems which can be found on the top of the engine and its surrounding area. Ideally, the operating range of engine oil must be kept within 180 to 200 Fahrenheit. It is important that the oil maintain this temperature range to ensure that it will perform its intended functions correctly.

The Importance of Antifreeze and Cooling Systems

The engine in your car runs best at a fairly high temperature making the efficient operation of the antifreeze and cooling systems essential. They serve the purpose of heating up your engine quickly while removing any excess heat from your engine and keep it at a constant temperature.

With a cold engine, the components can wear out faster, making the engine operate less efficiently and emit more pollutants. An inefficient system can produce costly repair bills in the future.
